As a Registered Acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner helping couples in Markham have children, one of the most rewarding parts of supporting their path to parenthood is empowering future fathers.
While much of the fertility attention is focused on women and their egg quality, sperm quality makes up exactly 50% of the genetic blueprint. It takes two to tango! In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we look at male fertility through the lens of Kidney Jing (Essence), Yin, and Yang. Jing is the foundation of our reproductive potential, governing the development, count, and motility of sperm.

To celebrate all the men working hard to provide for their future family and dreaming of becoming fathers, we’ve put together a functional, delicious, and clinically backed Super Swimmer Trail Mix.
Whether you are prepping this for yourself or looking for a meaningful gift for a future dad, this blend bridges ancient thousands years old wisdom with modern fertility nutritional science.
The Anatomy of a Super Swimmer Trail Mix
1.Walnuts (Hu Tao)
- The TCM Lens: Deeply tonifies the Kidney Yang, warms the core, and strengthens the lower back and knees.
- The Science: Exceptionally high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show regular walnut consumption supports sperm morphology (shape) and vitality by reducing cellular oxidative stress.
2. Brazil Nuts
- The TCM Lens: A dense, grounding nut that helps anchor Qi and builds structural reserve.
- The Science: The absolute king of Selenium. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant essential for the creation of healthy sperm, specifically playing a major role in how straight and strong sperm can swim (motility).
3. Pumpkin Seeds (Nan Gua Zi)
- The TCM Lens: Seeds (Zi) inherently contain the condensed essence of a plant’s future life cycle, making them direct tonics for Kidney Jing
- The Science: One of the richest plant-based sources of Zinc. Zinc is the foundational mineral for male reproductive health, crucial for maintaining optimal testosterone production and sperm count.
4. Goji Berries (Gou Qi Zi) & Dried Mulberries (Sang Shen)
- The TCM Lens: Goji berries are the premier tonic for Kidney Yin and Liver Blood, brightening the eyes and enriching fluids. Mulberries partner perfectly with them to deeply nourish Yin and add a rich, natural sweetness.
- The Science: Packed with antioxidants like vitamins A and C, which protect developing sperm from environmental toxins and free radical damage during their 90-day development cycle.
5. Black Sesame Seeds (Hei Zhi Ma)
- The TCM Lens: Because they are naturally black, these seeds correspond directly to the Water element and the Kidney system. They are traditionally used to build deep fluid reserves and preserve reproductive longevity.
- The Science: High in calcium, magnesium, and essential lipids that fuel cellular energy production.
6. Dark Chocolate Chips or Cacao Nibs
- The TCM Lens: The bitter flavor routes energy down toward the Heart. Balancing the Heart-Kidney axis helps ground the nervous system and manage the emotional stress that can accompany a fertility journey.
- The Science: Rich in L-arginine, an amino acid widely recognized for optimizing nitric oxide production and supporting healthy pelvic blood flow.
The Recipe: Note: Because Brazil nuts are incredibly potent (just 1 to 2 nuts meet 100% of your daily selenium needs!), it is important to portion this mix mindfully rather than mindlessly grazing.
